Undiagnosed HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C in Primary Care – TARGET-ID

Project Leads: Dr Werner Leber, Prof Chris Griffiths, Prof Jane Anderson

Overview

Identifying people living with blood-borne viruses (BBV) remains a challenge.

Up to 1 in 20 people who are living with HIV and almost half of those living with Hepatitis B (HBV) or Hepatitis C (HCV) are unaware of this. New approaches are urgently needed to diagnose people and link them to treatment earlier, to improve their health outcomes and limit passing it on to others.

TARGET-ID is an NIHR SPCR-funded cross-disciplinary, expert/lay programme, promoting targeted, combined (HIV-HBV-HCV) BBV testing in primary care, using a risk-score algorithm to identify people at highest risk of acquisition, combined with peer support for those diagnosed to promote effective linkage to care and treatment.

We bring together people with lived experience of having BBVs and representatives of leading Hepatitis and HIV clinicians and organisations, with experts in statistical and epidemiological modelling, risk-score modellers, experts in intervention development and implementation, and qualitative, quantitative and economic evaluation, to co-create and co-evaluate this programme.
